5 Perspectives over 5 years at Gridlines

Paul Myers

I’ve been working with Gridlines for just over two years. It has flown by. Let me tell you why.

Gridlines is a small-but-growing business. We had a little fewer than 20 people when I got involved in late 2020; two years later about twice that many faces are on the weekly zoom calls. This growth is well planned and executed. We aren’t overtrading our way to 5/10-year targets, we are ramping up capacity at the same time as generating demand.

In plain English: we are finding, hiring, and training good people at the same time as developing customers and supporting our very capable team to get the work done. Many companies in service industries identify either capacity or demand as ‘The Bottleneck’ then focus on that for the next reporting period. Sure, that sorts out ‘The Bottleneck’, but while that’s going on other parts of the business are quietly turning into new bottlenecks. There will always be bottlenecks, the game is to make sure they are small and spread around, not a few killer points which strangle the business.

As for the humans, there is emotional intelligence throughout. The leaders are normal people with hopes and dreams and family and pets and lives outside of the office. They know if their people are happy or not, and they try to fix it. This is not universal in business. Having the workplace, be it virtual or IRL, somewhere people are happy to turn up to and get things done is where we want to be. You might not agree with all that. If you got an education then worked all of the hours then retired at 40 that’s no problem, that was your choice and you smashed it. But for those who want work to be more than just the place you have to turn up to for a chunk of your week, I know someone you can call…

Working with Gridlines has been an amazing experience. Gridlines has given me the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, across a range of industries, while also learning new tools.

The ability to work from any location offers a person a great deal of freedom and improves both their personal and professional welfare. The entire Gridlines team has always been very encouraging in both personal and professional development.

Specifically thorough the training sessions that Kenny has arranged for the team.

The team’s senior management is incredibly responsive, which makes communication about everything very quick and ensures that you never get stuck.

I’d like to thank everyone at Gridlines for giving me such a great stage to work on and so many chances for improvement.

I joined Gridlines in the Spring of 2020. Lockdown had hit us in the UK and there was no chance of meeting anyone in person. It even took over 6 months of being employed by Gridlines to actually meet Kenny in person!

The trust that both Kenny & Danny showed in me is something that I will always be grateful for. Had the shoe been on the other foot, I would have felt apprehensive about hiring someone I had never met.

As for much of the world, 2020 had been the hardest time in my life personally. However, the incredible team that we have here helped me settle into my role (at the time) of ‘Marketing Associate’. I learned and matured so much in such a short space of time that looking back I hardly recognise who I was when I joined Gridlines, both from a skills and personal perspective.

Kenny & Danny have championed my personal development whilst I have been here which has been invaluable to my confidence in the role that I now occupy as ‘Marketing Manager’. If there was an area of obvious weakness in my work then I am always encouraged to address it, whether that be through a course, an in-person programme, or a lecture series. It has truly taught me the value of the investment in education and new skills.

It’s a difficult balancing act when it comes to working remotely. How can you keep team morale up when people live all over the world? I think that the management team do a great job at implementing new processes and systems that allow us to work collaboratively, and flexibly. Gridlines have been a global remote team from the start. It’s baked into the companies DNA to ensure that everyone in the team is comfortable and feels valued whilst working remotely. That is what I love about working here.

Working at Gridlines has been an absolute blast. I joined the team as a marketing apprentice two years ago and I’ve learned so much, not just about marketing but about myself too.

One of the best things about Gridlines is that it’s all remote-based. I can work from anywhere, which is great as I’m most efficient in my home office. Plus, the team is super supportive and always willing to help out.

They helped me understand the ins and outs of marketing and gave me the confidence to run my own campaigns. Hard work is rewarded here. The company is always looking for new ways to do things and they value their employees’ ideas. Plus, as I’ve grown in my role, I’ve been given more and more responsibilities. It’s been super cool to see how I’ve impacted the company.

Gridlines is a great place to work. The remote working is awesome, the team is solid, and there are plenty of opportunities for growth. Plus, the company rewards hard work and values employee input. I feel lucky to be a part of this company and can’t wait to see where it takes me next.

Thank you to Danny & Kenny for giving me so many opportunities to improve here at Gridlines.

It’s been three months since I joined Gridlines and it has indeed been a very enriching experience for me so far since my onboarding.

Honestly, it feels great to be surrounded by industry experts who are passionate about making the workplace more equitable. The culture here is very transparent, and every employee irrespective of their position is heard and respected. The founders and the management team are always open to discussing new ideas and improvements.

In the past few months since my joining, I have been provided with opportunities to sharpen my skill set, I am not only learning about my own domain but there has been a lot of cross functional learning as well.

It’s so interesting to see how far the company has come since its formation. Gridlines being a growing organisation offers ample opportunities for career enhancement. People here have seen my potential and always encourage me to develop it by trusting me with increasing responsibility, and letting me take on new tasks and projects which makes it challenging and motivates me. It provides a very conducive environment to learn, grow and prosper.

One of all the many things I appreciate about Gridlines is that it values their employee’s work-life balance. It offers flexible working hours and time off whenever needed. I really enjoy and look forward to showing up for work every day because of my amazing team! People here are so approachable, I would say that I work with some of the brightest, friendliest, and most hardworking people.

I would say Gridlines has a culture that embraces flexibility and celebrates diversity of thought and approach. It’s great to be part of the Gridlines family, and I am excitedly looking forward to the coming years.
